Kaleidoscope Dinners

Remember when we were kids?  Most of us had a cardboard kaleidoscope that we found fascinating.  From the outside, the colored rocks in one end of the tube looked kind of ordinary and dull colored.  But when you put your eye to the hole in the aluminum piece on the other end and held it up to the sun, the colors were brilliant.  And each time you turned the end, the patterns shifted and changed into something even more fantastic than the last one. That’s what Kaleidoscope Dinners can be like.  Your fellow diners are a different mixture each time we meet.  It is a great opportunity to get to know others in the congregation in a relaxed setting in the host’s home while you experience other dishes and methods of food preparation.

Here's how it works

There is a host for the meal, who is responsible for coordinating the date and time for their group, in consultation with the group members.  The dinner is held in the host’s home.  It usually works best if the host communicates as many options for the meal that month as there are available.  The other members weigh in with their schedules and soon (hopefully) you have a date that works for your small group. This small group is the one that changes every meal; depending on the number of participants, there will be three to five small groups.  Next meal, you will be in a different small group, because we turned the end of the kaleidoscope.  The host also is responsible for providing the main course and beverages.  The other members will contribute the side dish, salad and dessert for the group.  The host should plan on communicating the main dish when scheduling the dinner, so the other members' contributions will complement the main dish.  Sometimes, when the main dish is something like spaghetti or lasagna, instead of a side dish, the host may request breads.  Depending on the schedules and number of participants, you will probably only host once or twice a year.  As host, it is helpful to your guests to ask them which component they would like to contribute.
